Unit Calendar and Assessment Plan
This unit connects multiple disciplines through cooperative learning to examine how equitable the Olympics are. Students choose an athlete to research and follow through the Olympics. Students use math to examine possible correlation between a country's wealth and medals. Students also use this athlete's flag to create a poster project involving math, physics and Spanish. The flag poster project is shared between these disciplines including the flag's geometry, the Spanish words for colors and shapes, and the physics of the colors used (wavelengths and reflection). Students also examine how the art in the flag and the Olympic symbol can represent a country or event. Students present this poster in all of their classes at the end of the unit.
In addition, students explore how equitable competitions like the Olympics are. In an effort to create a more equitable competition, students research types of intelligence and design an School Olympic Event each team focused on one of the multiple intelligeneces in a Service Learning Project.
Throughout the Unit, students work on both their integrated poster and multiple intelligence event. They also explore the Olympics more in depth in each subject area. The Unit Calendar and Assessment Plan below includes more detail.
